Sponge iron rotary kilns, also called reduced iron rotary kilns, are a type of rotary calcining kiln used in the metallurgical industry. These continuously rotating kilns serve as reactors, using solid carbon to reduce iron ore into sponge iron through a solid-state reaction. With mineral resources becoming increasingly scarce, these kilns are gaining attention for their ability to handle complex ore processing efficiently.

Sponge iron also called direct reduced iron, is a metallic iron product produced by removing oxygen from iron ore through direct reduction process. With the advantages of low impurity content, high flexibility, and strong adaptability, it is often used in the steel manufacturing industry.

A sponge iron rotary kiln operates through several key steps. First, iron ore and a carbon-based reducing agent, such as coal, are fed into the kiln. As the kiln slowly rotates, the materials move gradually from the feed end to the discharge end. Inside the kiln, the temperature is carefully controlled to promote a solid-state reduction reaction, where oxygen is removed from the iron ore. This process produces sponge iron. The kiln also includes systems for heating, gas flow control, and waste gas removal. The entire operation is continuous, energy-efficient, and designed to ensure consistent product quality.
