The first step is the drying phase. As soon as the utilized activated carbon reaches the drying furnace, the volatile organic compounds it adsorbs start to decompose and are released as water vapor and waste gas.

The step of carbonization then starts. The majority of organic materials are carbonized and undergo heat breakdown. These carbonization products make a transient deposit in the activated carbon's pore structure.

During the key activation stage, which also entails the reconstruction and repair of the activated carbon's original pore structure, the residual organic matter completely breaks down around 700–750°C.

The cooling phase is the last stage. Once properly cooled, the regenerated activated carbon is released from the system.
