The LECA(light expanded clay aggregate) rotary kiln is a highly efficient piece of thermal equipment designed specifically for calcining raw materials such as fly ash, shale, and clay to produce lightweight expanded ceramsite (LECA). Light expanded clay aggregate is mostly made from clay, fly ash, or biological sludge. After that, these substances undergo high-temperature calcination and expansion. Low density, high strength, high water absorption rate, heat insulation, fire resistance, and earthquake resistance are some of its qualities.

 

Among other uses, it can be substituted for regular sand and gravel to make lightweight aggregate concrete. Additionally, it can be utilized as a permeable pavement material, an adsorbent, a water treatment filter material, a culture medium for soilless gardening and agricultural production, and a raw material for construction materials including hollow blocks and bridge decks.

 

How does a LECA Rotary Kiln work

The raw ingredients for the pre-treated block clay initially go into the drying kiln section, where they rotate to progressively produce homogenous particles ranging in size from 3 to 10 mm. A conveying device transports the dried particles into the calcination section, where they go through important physical and chemical changes.

 

The organic matter is fully broken down in the preheating zone at 400–800°C, the clay is melted and foamed by the high-temperature expansion zone at 1000–1200°C, and a fixed structure is finally formed in the stable zone at 900–1100°C.

 

The final products acquire the characteristic spherical or elliptical shapes as a result of the materials rotating with the cylindrical LECA rotary kiln body and being uniformly fired at high temperatures throughout the whole process. The product is quickly cooled by an effective cooling system after exiting the kiln and then stored.
